This lesson plan consists of a 6-paragraph 358 word text – a light-hearted look at how Canadians cope with winter. It’s a great way to introduce the topic of the season in general and opens up many lines of discussion. Following the text is a vocabulary exercise using winter adjectives (slippery, snowy, freezing, etc.). The third part of the lesson unit is a great “Brainstorming Exercise” where students work together to solve winter problems – e.g. where to get information on the weather, what to do if you have an exam and there’s a blizzard outside, etc. This activity could be done together as a class or in smaller groups and is a great way to practice writing simple sentences. One page has the “problems” and the second sheet has the chart for “solutions”. Teacher answer sheets for both activities are included. Price: $1.99 Cdn. Delivered as a PDF file.

Flesch-Kincaid Reading Level 7.6

This lesson plan consists of a 6-paragraph 359 word text – a light-hearted look at how Canadians cope with winter. It’s a great way to introduce the topic of the season in general and opens up many lines of discussion. Following the text is an exercise matching winter idioms – students match the meaning in Column A to the idioms in Column B. Fun to do as a class, but can also be done in groups, or individually. Students are then asked to choose 4 of the idioms and write their own sentences. The third part of the lesson unit is a great “Brainstorming Exercise” where students work together to solve winter problems – e.g. where to get information on the weather, what to do if you have an exam and there’s a blizzard outside, etc. This is a great way to practice writing simple sentences.

A new school year is upon us – hope everyone had a wonderful summer, whether you were teaching or just relaxing!

New to LPC this Fall is the first installment in “Outstanding Canadians” beginning with three levels of a Lesson Plan about Terry Fox. For those of us who remember, it hardly seems possible he passed away thirty years ago. His inspiration to others since then has been amazing.

I have also listed two new lesson plans that will be of interest to teachers in Ontario that cover the Provincial government and election that is coming up in early October. These have been created flor two levels, Advanced and Level 3.

In relating all of LPC’s lesson plans to LINC, Level 1 would probably be suitable for LINC 3, Level 2 for LINC 4, and Level 3 for LINC 5. If you are teaching at a higher level than that, Advanced would be your best bet. These are only rough guidelines. Again, I welcome questions on specifics.

Non-ESL teachers can use all of my lesson plans – reading levels will give an indication which might be best suitable for your class.

Happy teaching!
- Diana.
